Shadow Over Morrowind

Secrets of Apocrypha is the seventh main story arc of Elder Scrolls Online, following on from the Legacy of the Bretons. It is an overarching story which spans multiple content updates in the form of DLC, Chapters, and free quests, covering the entirety of 2023's content releases and beyond. Details of the plot were officially announced on January 25, 2023.

It is a multi-year story arc[1] and will continue with 2024's content releases.[2] The first half of the arc is referred to as the Shadow Over Morrowind storyline, while the second half is called the Recollection of Ithelia storyline.[3]

Quest Order[edit]

Due to the multiple content releases involved in this storyline, there are no prerequisites for completing these quests and they can be done in any order. However, they do follow a chronological order as listed here.

The 2023 promo letter

Influencers received a letter from Leramil the Wise in advance of the Necrom reveal. When held under a blacklight, the symbol of Hermaeus Mora is revealed.

A letter from Beragon was sent alongside autumnal leaves and pieces of a glass puzzle in advance of the Gold Road reveal. Different influencers got different puzzle fragments making up parts of a whole. For more information, see the Gold Road article.

Notes[edit]

  • The original title of this story arc ("Shadow Over Morrowind") is a reference to H.P. Lovecraft's short story The Shadow over Innsmouth, which the genre of cosmic horror—this story arc's theme—is heavily influenced by.
  • The Crown Store preview description for the Eye of Fate prologue on the Announcement screen refers to the "Secrets of Apocrypha" year-long story. This may have been a working name for the arc when it was only going to span content releases for 2023.
    • The 2024 releases are called the "Recollection of Ithelia" storyline in the tutorial, dropping the "Shadow Over Apocrypha" name used for 2023's releases. On the roadmap, 2024's releases are called "ESO in 2024" or simply "Gold Road".[4]
  • Infinite Archive was initially implied and later confirmed to be under invasion due to Ithelia's influence, tying it into the story arc.[5]
