Arnesia is a location or region in the eastern parts of Black Marsh, near Archon and Thorn. Elven civilizations of Black Marsh, such as the Barsaebic Ayleids and the Cantemiric Velothi, were known to settle and inhabit territories around the Arnesia, as well as Archon and Thorn, before their extinction.[1] There is a round island off the east coast of this area, which has a dark green/gray terrain when viewed from overhead, different from anything seen in the rest of the province.[2]

Little is known about the settlement itself, but it lends its name to the conflict between Argonians and Dunmer, the Arnesian War. It took part in 3E 396.[3] This conflict started as a slave revolt in the southern lands of the House Dres, and escalated into a full-scale war between Black Marsh and Morrowind.[4] The cause of the war was the death of a Dunmer trader named Roris, who was later canonized into a saint by the Tribunal Temple.[5] Morrowind's armies ultimately defeated the Argonians and expanded Morrowind's territory to the south, but as of 3E 432 the Argonians began to reclaim land conquered during the Arnesian War.[6] It was likely among the ancient territories that were "stolen by Argonia" that Dagoth Ur sought to reclaim.[7]

The code phrase "Orphan of Arnesia" was used by the members of the House Redoran in 3E 427. House Hlaalu was privy to this information, however.[8][9][10]
