History[edit]

Little is known of Kailstig's past. During his travels as a daring adventurer, Kailstig crossed paths with Turuk Redclaws and became one of his comrades. He was one of the few who could keep up with Turuk's fearless approach to taking on the most challenging tasks. Together with Mighty Mordra, they dared each other to seemingly insane challenges such as the naked dungeon run. They soon became very knowledgeable about many dangerous places. Eventually, they established a guild of like-minded adventurers called the Undaunted.[1]

He was responsible for challenging those who seek to join the Undaunted to prove themselves by completing dangerous tasks, such as surviving the travel through the dark and dangerous cave known as the Fungal Grotto. In addition, he would welcome newly successful initiates into the Undaunted by offering a toast and a song. Kailstig had a humorous personality and enjoyed making jokes and teasing new members of the group. However, he ultimately welcomed them into the fold and acknowledged that their deeds would live on long after their body fails. Kailstig was willing to teach and provide resources for those who proved themselves worthy of being a member of Undaunted.[2][3]

He was also responsible for distributing rewards and congratulatory letters to the bravest members of the Undaunted.[2] Other high-ranking members were also involved in the task as well.[4][5][6]

As of 2E 582 he was a warrior and adventurer of some renown. Although no longer as youthful as he used to be, Kailstig the Axe was still renowned for his bravery and his willingness to explore the deepest dungeons. He was considered to be among the most courageous members of the Undaunted guild. Those who sought to prove themselves and climb the ranks of the Undaunted were encouraged to take the Pledges and demonstrate their worth, hoping to surpass Kailstig's fame. He was often found in the taverns, spending his gold generously.[2][7][8]

When the Constellations fell from the sky in Craglorn, he investigated the dangers occupying Hel Ra Citadel, in hopes to stop the threat and gain even more fame and recognition. A group of Undaunted newcomers attempted to conquer the Citadel before him, having the Anka-Ra sound their warhorn and making it as far as the Hall of the Warrior, but were unsuccessful, perishing as a result of this escapade.[2][9][10]

Under his permission, another group of Undaunted went in and fought off the Anka-Ra, defeating the Air Monarch Ra Kotu, Yokeda Kai, and Rok'dun the Flame before fighting the Celestial Warrior. The Warrior unleashed his shehai, blasting open the walls of the Nedic chamber, but was ultimately defeated by the Undaunted and freed from the Serpent's control, joining the Celestial Thief in their quest to vanquish him. Following their triumph over the Celestial Warrior's forces, Kailstig made sure to show his gratitude to his allies with a fitting reward.[2][11]

In the same year, Kailstig braved the Blessed Crucible, a dangerous gladiatorial arena in the Rift, and barely made it out alive. He suggested it as a worthy challenge for all Undaunted.[2]
