" No one in Markarth knows more about the Deep Folk and their scrap than old Nolovan!" —Nolovan[1]

Nolovan was a renowned Reachfolk craftsman and Dwemer metal dealer active during the times of the Three Banners War of the Second Era. He possessed considerable expertise in Deep Folk and their machinery, establishing him as one of the most knowledgeable individuals on the subject in the city of Markarth during his times.[1][2][3]

History[edit]

Silver vaults of Bthar-Zel

Little is known about Nolovan's past, but at a certain point, he delved into the realm of working with Dwarven automatons. Establishing a store in the southeast section of Markarth, he became recognized as one of the city's premier tinkers and scrap dealers. The reforms implemented by Ard Caddach contributed to the growth of his business.[1][4][2]

Nolovan sourced Dwarven scrap, frequently ordering packages from underground explorers and hiring adventurers to collect remnants of Dwarven technology. He occasionally left items in the depths, and in return, he received periodic packages. A house located just beyond the city gates was known to be the delivery point for parcels bearing his name.[1]

Although he never ventured there himself, Nolovan held the belief that as of 2E 582, Bthar-Zel harbored one of the last untouched Dwarven vaults. This conviction stemmed from the formidable machines safeguarding the site, acting as a deterrent to his exploration. His belief proved accurate, as the vaults indeed housed vast amounts of powerful enchanted silver.[1][5]

In 2E 582, during his visit to the city, Count Verandis Ravenwatch encountered Nolovan, finding the craftsman intriguing and capturing his attention. The Count hoped that Nolovan could assist him in locating the Arkthzand Keystone before Lady Belain of the Nighthollow Clan finds it. Verandis sent his associate to trade with Nolovan while he went to negotiate an alliance with Arana and her witch-rebels.[3][5] Nolovan accurately speculated that the keystone was situated in Bthar-Zel and proposed selling the map to this ancient Dwarven complex to the associate of Ravenwatch. This transaction could take place either through the delivery of one of his parcels from outside Markarth or a direct purchase.[1][6][7] Soon afterwards, the associate, instructed by Gwendis of House Ravenwatch, went to meet Arana and Verandis in the Rebel's Retreat. The Witch-rebels and House Ravenwatch located the ruin and uncovered the keystone. However, at that crucial moment, Rada al-Saran and Belain managed to steal it.[2][5]
