Ungolim is a Wood Elf assassin living in Bravil, and the target of an alleged Dark Brotherhood-ordered assassination in the A Kiss Before Dying quest. It is revealed in the Dark Brotherhood questline that Ungolim is the leader of the Black Hand, the Listener. He routinely visits the Lucky Old Lady statue each night, which is where he receives the list of people to visit that have performed the Black Sacrament.
Ungolim leaves his house at 5pm every day and makes the short walk to the Lucky Old Lady statue. He will then stand beside the statue, performing his duty as Listener of the Dark Brotherhood. After he has finished hearing who has prayed to the Night Mother, he heads back to his house at 2am. Perhaps knowing the grim fate that awaits him, he paces around his house without ever eating or sleeping, until he heads back out the next day at 5pm.
Ungolim wears a green brocade doublet with a matching silk garment and green velvet shoes. He wields a leveled bow (enchanted from level 4; always best possible quality for his level), from which he fires silver arrows. He carries his house key, his torch, and a small amount of gold. As a member of the Black Hand, Ungolim has permanent resist magic 50% and resist normal weapons 50% abilities on himself.
Ungolim, along with Alval Uvani, are the only Black Hand members who can be located without starting the Dark Brotherhood questline. Ungolim is also the only one to maintain a consistent schedule up to the time of his death.
Dialogue[edit]
If you attempt to engage him in conversation, all he will say is:
- "I'm sorry, but I'm really not one for engaging in conversation. Please, leave me."
Related Quests[edit]
- A Kiss Before Dying: In Bravil lies the home of the Lucky Old Lady and a "lucky" Bosmer, and today fortune shines on both... but only one shines back.
Quest-Related Events[edit]
Your seventh dead drop orders will order you to slay a supposed would-be adulterer:
- "Your next target is a Wood Elf named Ungolim, who resides in the city of Bravil. Bravil is also home to an ancient statue known as the Lucky Old Lady. It is seen as a symbol of good luck and prosperity, and the fools of Bravil often speak to the statue and wish for good tidings. Every night, poor lovestruck Ungolim visits the Lady and pleads desperately for the heart of a young maiden. This maiden is married, and her husband has learned of Ungolim's affection for his bride. He fears the competition, it would seem, and has commissioned the Dark Brotherhood to help in the matter."
The orders also provide you with some key information regarding his schedule, as well as a warning:
- "The Wood Elf owns a house in the city, but he spends his days securely locked inside. I recommend you lie in wait at the Lucky Old Lady statue, and then eliminate Ungolim when he arrives for his nightly visit. He's generally there between the hours of 6:00 PM and 1:00 AM."
- "By all accounts, Ungolim is a deadly archer and a fearless opponent. I also have reason to believe he is expecting trouble, so if Ungolim senses danger, he may attack you on sight. And, like the Khajiit J 'Ghasta [sic], Ungolim has bribed the guards to look the other way if there is a fight, so they won't interfere. Be vigilant, and bring the Wood Elf down!"
Once you have killed Ungolim, an enraged Lucien Lachance will however reveal Ungolim's true identity:
- "Your dead drops went unvisited, your targets ignored. Instead, you have been systematically killing off all the members of the Black Hand! J'Ghasta, Shaleez, Alval Uvani, Havilstein Hoar-Blood -- Speakers and Silencers all. And Ungolim... the Listener himself!"
During Honor Thy Mother, you will also discover that The Night Mother knew all along about the traitor in the midst of the Brotherhood, but allowed to continue his activities due to her displeasure with Ungolim:
- "I knew of his thirst for vengeance. I could have informed my Listener. But I refused! Refused to reward such incompetence! Ungolim was weak. Indeed, I allowed Mathieu Bellamont to proceed on his destructive course. Just as I allowed you to intercept him."
Unused Dialogue[edit]
Ungolim has two lines that you will never hear, due to how his AI package works when he is visiting the Lucky Old Lady statue:
- "What is this interruption?" (if approached)
- "There are things to be done. So many things..." (upon exiting conversation)
Notes[edit]
- In the game, it is stated that Ungolim is a Listener in the Dark Brotherhood and also belongs to the Black Hand. However, in the Construction Set, Ungolim is only listed as a member of the "Dark Brotherhood -- Won't Call Guards" faction (editor ID
DarkBrotherhoodNoGuard
). This faction does not have any ranks. The information listed in the summary box is the Construction Set faction, because this is the information that controls the NPC's disposition, dialogue, and responses to scripts; see Factions for details. - Ungolim also appears as a card in Legends.
