Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

There are two ways to start this quest: Find the sword Light of Dawn, or find a copy of An Expanded Excerpt from Vampires of Tamriel. If you find the book first, you'll have to go to Nornalhorst and deal with Ancient Lord Volmyr, along with a horde of vampires. Once you've recovered the sword (by whatever means), you need to power it up by using it to kill vampires. Each 50 vampires gives it another stage; once you've killed 200, it reaches its full potential, and the quest will be complete.

Journal Entries[edit]

Stage Finishes Quest Journal Entry
10 Light of Dawn, a weapon of legend, is now in my possession.
20 I have found the book "An Expanded Excerpt from Vampires of Tamriel, Vol. II." In it, there is a mention about Light of Dawn, a weapon of legend and bane of Vampires. As I confirmed, it rested here, on Cyrodiil, in a dungeon called Nornalhorst. I have already retrieved it from the clutches of Lord Volmyr. Nevertheless, the book gives further meaning to the mystery that surrounds this magnificent blade.

I have found the book "An Expanded Excerpt from Vampires of Tamriel, Vol. II." In it, there is a mention about Light of Dawn, a weapon of legend and bane of Vampires. It possibly rests here, on Cyrodiil, in a dungeon called Nornalhorst. If the information in the book is correct, a mighty Vampire Lord is currently draining the power from Light of Dawn through dark incantations. Perhaps I should investigate this further, although it sounds like a very dangerous deal in which to meddle.
30 I have found Nornalhorst. Now it is time to see if the book on vampires was correct. If it is, then I expect that these vampires will not let me take Light of Dawn without dying in the attempt. Lord Volmyr, if he is still here, will be a formidable opponent. I should make sure that my skill is up to the task.
40 Light of Dawn is mine. Recovering the sword proved extremely difficult, but with cunning and strength I prevailed over Lord Volmyr and his hordes of vampire servants. The sword is light and sharp, truly a magnificent weapon. However, it seems that Lord Volmyr has affected its power. No longer does it shine with pure light, as it is told in the legend that surrounds it. Perhaps there is a way to bring it back to life.
50 Light of Dawn seems to react when wielded against vampires. Their blood seeps into its blade. As the blade drew the last spark of life out of my vampiric foe, the taint of bloodlust from the fell beast was absorbed into the blade, nullifying a small fraction of the curse that Lord Volmyr put on the weapon. If I wish to fully release the blade from Volmyr's curse, I should kill as many vampires with it as I can.
60 Suddenly, Light of Dawn has become more powerful. I felt it as soon as the vampire fell under its blade. It appears that the deaths of so many vampires have awakened its power. However, after all this time, I have come to bond with the sword and I now recognize that it is not yet satiated from the slaughter of vampires.
70 It happened again. Light of Dawn has grown in power once more. I clearly felt its joy in soaking the vampire's blood. The blade has become even sharper and its surface shines more brigthly. Yet, despite its already deadly edge, Light of Dawn seems to have an even stronger effect against vampires. Their flesh tears apart, inflicted with grievous wounds, whenever I strike them with the sword. Still, it grows even more desperate to slay its destined foes. Perhaps I have not seen its full power yet.
80 Finishes quest☑ I stand in awe before Light of Dawn. Finally, after countless vampires have found their death under its edge, the sword has regained its full power. I feel it as if it were an extension of my own body. Light of Dawn rejoiced at returning to its former glory. Now, its edge glows brightly, irradiating flashes of light from whatever creature feels its wrath. The Vampire's Bane has at last come to shine as the sun rays at dawn.
Notes
  • Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
  • Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in random order.
  • If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
  • On PC It is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering setstage OOOLightOfDawnQuest stage, where stage is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages. See SetStage for more information.
