Oblivion talk:Umbacano Manor
Deletion[edit]
Why should this article be deleted? There is nothing wrong with it in my opinion, and if you look at Rindir's Staffs for example, it is a seperate article completely from Rindir. If this article is to be deleted, then so should all the others that are like this, but if it not to be deleted, then it could stay like the Rindir's Staffs page. I do not see why a good and perfectly OK article should be deleted while a different article with the same purpose, if you like, be not even considered for deletion. I will protect my articles with all my might.

- I think this article could do some good, seeing as how Umbacano Manor is slightly different than other houses. I suggest that Redguard Elite should add more info such as layout or decor or whatever, because right now it is basically a big thieving guide. The patrol information and whatever is useful; better to have it all on one page than have parts of it in many different pages. Colovian 19:09, 10 February 2008 (EST)

- This is not "your" article. It is an article on a community-based collaborative wiki, where decisions about which articles are appropriate or how the content should be organized are made by the community. And the main priority in making those decisions is the site's readership, not the desires of individual editors to have their own personalized articles. Starting off a discussion about an article's usefulness by emphasizing that it's your personal article is just going to prejudice the community against you, because all that you're doing is emphasizing that you're not interested in participating collaboratively to improve the site overall. Keeping this article is likely to just lead to future problems, based on past experiences with editors who insisted that an article was owned by them and therefore refused to allow the article to be modified or improved in any way. As it said at the bottom of the screen when you made this contribution: If you don't want your writing to be edited mercilessly and redistributed at will, then don't submit it here. If you want to have your own personal article, a wiki is not the right place for you.
- As for this specific article, the content on it would be far more appropriate added to Umbacano's article. Currently all information about NPC houses is on the NPC's page. All links that mention Umbacano's Manor point to the Umbacano article therefore readers who are interested in this information will be looking for it on Umbacano's page. And even though this one house is likely to have a relatively long description (compared to all the other houses in the game), I still cannot imagine that there would be so much information that a separate article would be required. So why not put all of the information in one place instead of forcing readers to pull up two separate pages to get the information that they're looking for?
- Your argument about Rindir's Staffs is irrelevant. Rindir's Staffs is a store not a house. There are only a couple dozen stores in the game and the stores have a much higher profile in the game than the houses. Furthermore, many editors were against even creating individual pages for the stores. So you're really not going to win any arguments by taking an already controversial example and concluding that hundreds of unwanted pages are now needed. In other words, frankly, a lot of editors might be very willing to delete all of the existing store articles if the only choice was between articles for every building or articles for no buildings. Luckily, the system is not that inflexible. So if the community prefers that stores have articles but not houses, we are free to draw a dividing line at that point and then enforce it.
- In summary, the problem with the article isn't the content. It's where that content has been placed. We try to keep the content on the wiki organized so that readers can find the information as easily as possible. That means that creating unnecessary, redundant new articles is not appropriate. In 99% of cases, it is far more useful to find the existing article (in this case Umbacano) and add the information to that article. And if that means that you don't get to have "your" own article, my guess is that's likely to be better for the site. --NepheleTalk 19:22, 10 February 2008 (EST)
After Secrets of the Ayleids[edit]
Perhaps the revamp can include a comment about the state of the manor after Oblivion:Secrets of the Ayleids. Near as I can tell, despite Umbacano not returning, his servants still treat the building as his. (RPing a thief, I had thought to remove his collections and sell them, but decided it wasn't worth the trouble to fence.) If the PC is caught inside, the servants remark that they "fear the worst", but regardless, hands off. 152.44.150.22 06:02, 4 January 2022 (UTC)
