You will first hear his voice when you enter the Catacombs.

Captain Carvain: "Spread out! Search the area and kill anyone who gets in our way."

You will encounter Captain Carvain in the Tomb of the Grand Adepts, accosting Izjadi, and Runji. He scares Runji so badly, he faints. When you engage him in combat, he yells at you.
