Saga of Varen's Rebellion
by Capiton Casca, Poet to Regent Clivia Tharn
An epic poem about Varen Aquilarios' rebellion and the aftermath

Part I

Varen Goes To War
By Capiton Casca, Poet to Regent Clivia Tharn

Varen Aquilarios,
Duke of Chorrel, Count of Kvatch,
Sat within his stone-walled keep.
Brooding on his circumstances.

He had served the Ruby Throne
With all his heart and soul,
Through times of battle and times of peace,
His loyalty was unquestioned.

But now his mind sorely troubled
By a dark stain on the countryside,
For the Emperor who claimed the throne,
The Imperial Dragon, Leovic,[sic] son of Moricar,
Threatened his land and people.

Levoic's grandsire, a Reachman of the North
Had claimed the Ruby Throne,
And yoked its peoples,
To his will and desires,
And his alien ways.

For Leovic did venerate,
The darkest of the Daedra,
Hircine, Namira,
And most of all,
Mehrunes Dagon, Prince of Destruction.

Varen saw all this,
And saw his people swayed,
By vile forces,
By the Emperor's proclamations,
And darkness claimed the land.

Yet he was loyal to the Throne,
And a faithful supporter of Leovic,
Regardless of the Emperor's harsh manner,
And his brutal beliefs.

Varen sought the wisdom of Abnur Tharn,
Wisest of the Elder Council,
Chancellor to the Ruby Throne,
Father to Clivia, astute in the ways of politics,

And Abnur said to him,
"Your loyalty is to the throne,
And for that you should be commended,
But does that loyalty truly
Extend to the one who sits upon it?"

Varen considered the chancellor's words,
And watched the foul practices,
Of the Daedric Princes in his land.
And knew that were they to continue,
His people's souls could not be saved.

Varen Aquilarios,
Duke of Chorrel [sic], Count of Kvatch,
Rose from his castle,
Sounded his horn,
And led his people to war.

Part 2

Varen Is Defeated
By Capiton Casca, Poet to Regent Clivia Tharn

Varen Aquilarios,
Colovian rebel, Bane to the Emperor,
Sat within his war camp,
Brooding over his loss.

Varen called upon his people,
And they rose for him in response,
Striving against the Emperor's forces,
And against his hated Daedra.

His people quickly built,
A wall across his border,
Sealing off Kvatch and Chorrel,
From the brutalities of the Empire.

The warriors of the Gold Coast,
The mighty Second Legion,
Rallied to his call,
And marched against the Imperial Dragon.

Varen left his home in Kvatch
To Carolus, his nephew, to defend,
And sought Jaros Truptor,
To make fast the walls for his people.

Yet the Emperor held his own great power,
And sent his own legions in response,
Legions loyal to the Ruby Throne,
And hard warriors from the north,
To crush the rebellion.

The two armies met in battle,
At Fort Ash, between Chorros [sic] and Imperial City,
The sides were evenly matched,
And contested throughout the day,
And into the deepening twilight.

And then the Emperor struck a blow,
With allies most unearthly,
Daedra from Oblivion, wielding foul magics,
Sent by his masters, the Daedric Princes.

Servants of Hircine, Namira,
And Mehunes Dagon most of all,
Appeared on the flank of Varen's army,
Driving the rebel cohorts back in disarray.

Surprised, ambushed, betrayed,
Varen called for the retreat,
And while the Emperor's forces
Stopped to loot and feast upon their victory,
Varen regrouped to heal and plan.

Now Varen sat at his campfire,
Bloody and beaten,
His troops routed and discouraged,
And considered his next move carefully.

That's when Abnur Tharn appeared,
Once Chancellor to the Ruby Throne,
Father to Clivia, wise in the ways of politics,
With news for the duke's ears alone.

Leyawiin had been liberated,
And the Legion of Chorrol has rebelled,
They would join their former duke,
On the field of battle,
Should he agree to fight on.

Varen Aquilarios,
Colovian rebel, Bane to the Emperor,
Rose from his campfire,
Girded his sword and raised his shield,
And once more took the battle to Leovic.

Part 3

Varen Victorious
By Capiton Casca, Poet to Regent Clivia Tharn

Varen Aquilarios,
Colovian hero, Emperor of Cyrodiil,
Sat upon his Ruby Throne,
Brooding upon his fate.

After the debacle at Fort Ash,
And reinforced by other rebel legions,
Varen's forces captured Bruma, in the north,
And from there spread their rebellion,
Through all corners of the Empire.

The rebels fought most valiantly,
Against Reach and Daedra alike,
Against betrayers and ambushers,
To the very walls of Imperial City itself.

They breached those walls,
And fought street by street,
House by house,
To the Imperial Palace.

And there Varen slayed Leovic,
At the foot of the Ruby Throne,
Driving his sword into the Dragon's chest,
Spilling Longhouse blood at the foot of the dais.

Then Varen took the Ruby Throne,
Acclaimed by all his legions,
They broke the power of the Daedric Princes,
And the people of Cyrodiil rejoiced.

Yet Varen Aquilios was sorely vexed,
For while he sat upon the throne,
He was not of the blood of Dragons,
As those who came before.

"Am I a false king?" he asked,
"Do I deserve this mighty boon?"
"I took the throne by force, not right."
"Am I worthy of my task?"

Then Abnur Tharn appeared,
Now Chancellor to the Ruby Throne,
Father to Clivia, wise in the ways of politics,
Who spoke these words to his Emperor King.

"It is true that you are not Dragonborn,"
"Yet I know how we may remedy this."
"I know a sorcerer, one Mannimarco,"
"Who holds a secret you must know."

"There is a relic, the Amulet of the Kings."
"Filled with great power and wisdom."
" It will restore the Dragonfires that protect our world."
"And make you the rightful ruler of the land."

Varen Aquilarios,
King of Cyrodiil, beloved by his people,
Left behind the Ruby Throne,
And gathered up his loyal companions,
To begin one final quest.
