It is categorized as an uncommon ingredient, meaning that all apothecary merchants have a 15% chance of carrying 1-5 samples. In addition, it may be randomly found in uncommon- and rare-type apothecary's satchels.

Creatures

Butterflies appear at butterfly spawning sites. Each spawning site generates up to three butterflies, with a random mix of both monarch and blue varieties, between 6am and 6pm. The same sites also generate luna moths and torchbugs between 8pm and 11pm. These sites generate every time the player enters an area, so large quantities can be quickly harvested by repeatedly entering and exiting a nearby cave or building. There are 515 spawning sites in 143 different locations. Locations with the greatest numbers are:

• 21 around Talking Stone Camp (Hjaalmarch)
• 17 inside Bloated Man's Grotto (Falkreath Hold)
• 14 around Broken Fang Cave (Whiterun Hold)
• 13 around Lund's Hut (Whiterun Hold)

Notes

• The wings of the Monarch butterflies are placed incorrectly on the insects, so that the wing structure is actually upside down.
• The harvested wings appear to be reskinned Luna Moth wings, as the butterflies themselves do not have swallowtail-shaped wing structures, as Luna Moths do.
